The other day, I ran out of my regular enzyme floor cleaner. But our floors really needed cleaning and I didn’t have the time to run to the store with the little time I had.
I very much prefer natural floor cleaners because our entire apartment is carpet-less so the cleaning solution gets all though the house…no getting around the chemicals there! And because both of us (and the cat!) walk around barefoot and do stretches on our floor, it’s really important to me that I keep the ingredients of our floor cleaner contact-friendly.
While I love the convenience of buying a natural option from the storing, DIY-ing a natural floor cleaner ends up being much more economical and I have absolute control over what goes into it.
One of my favorite go-to natural cleaning products isn’t actually a solution at all though. I really love using microfiber cloths for pretty much the entire house. A microfiber cloth picks up dirt, dust, and hair like a champ!
But although some folks say that microfiber cloths allow them to skip the cleaning solution entirely, I’m not one of those people. I love the super-clean-smell our house gets afterwards and, in a weird way, I sort of enjoy the little ritual I have when it comes to cleaning. (For me, a less cluttered house means a less cluttered mind!)

Ok, so without any more chit-chat, here is the DIY Natural Floor Cleaner that’s responsible for keeping my house clean and chemical free!
- 1/2 gallon warm water
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons witch hazel
- 10 drops tea tree oil
- 10 drops grapefruit essential oil
- optional: 5 drops grapefruit seed extract
1. Combine the apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, tea tree oil, and grapefruit essential oil (as well as the grapefruit seed extract, if using) into a large pail.
2. Add in the warm water and stir well.
3. Use to clean your floors!
Warning: it’s not good to use apple cider vinegar on hard wood floors when there they are waxed. I spot tested our floors to ensure this mixture was ok and have had no problems since. I absolutely recommend spot testing several times before using ANY floor cleaner, regardless of the floor you have.
