Easy Homemade Aromatherapy Heat Pack

I used to buy heatpacks from Walgreens all the time and I wondered, “What in the world is in these things?”.  But I had sore muscles and other various aches and pains so I continued to use them on a fairly consistent basis.  It wasn’t until I discovered that you could heat dry rice over many uses and it would retain heat that I quit those commercial chemical-sacks and became a lifetime convert of DIY heat packs.

These heatpacks take seconds to make, cost about $1.50 (depending on where you buy your rice), and are infinitely more comfortable than store-bought versions.  Chances are, you have the stuff in your house make one right now!

Stuff You’ll Need:

  • 1 lb white rice
  • 1 pillowcase
  • 3-5 drops lavender essential oil (you can use any essentials oils–or none at all–with these heatpacks…I just like how the heat helps to spread the aromatherapy benefits of the essential oils)

Steps:

1. Pour in the rice into your pillowcase.

2.  Tie off the pillowcase well (I tied it twice) to make sure the rice doesn’t get loose.

3. Microwave (or you can actually heat it up on a skillet…just don’t let the fabric burn, obviously!) for 2-4 minutes, depending on how hot you want it.

4. Right before you use it, sprinkle several drops of essential oils on the pillowcase, if using.

That’s it! Super easy, right?!
